🌺Aloha at the Market🌺
This Saturday, Thomasville Farmers Market is trading in the usual market hum for island vibes. We’re celebrating the new school year with our Back-to-School Luau, and we’d love for you to join us! Think fresh flowers, tropical music, fun activities, and a community full of smiles.
While you browse for crisp local produce, baked goods, homemade items and farm-fresh chicken, you can also enjoy games, kid-friendly activities, and festive touches that make this market day extra special. It’s the perfect way to savor the last tastes of summer and stock up on seasonal favorites before they’re gone.
A Taste of the Islands – Hawaiian Chicken & Veggie Skewers with Pineapple Glaze
We’re bringing the tropics to your table with this easy, colorful recipe that uses many ingredients you can find right here at the market.
Ingredients
1 ½ lbs fresh chicken breast or thighs, cubed
1 large zucchini, sliced into half-moons
1 yellow squash, sliced into half-moons
1 large tomato, cut into chunks
1 medium onion, cut into wedges
2 cups fresh pineapple chunks
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Pineapple Glaze
1 cup pineapple juice
¼ cup soy sauce
3 tbsp honey
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine pineapple juice, soy sauce, honey, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a simmer, then stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened.
Soak wooden skewers (if using) for 30 minutes. Thread chicken, vegetables, and pineapple alternately onto skewers.
Brush lightly with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill for 10–12 minutes, turning occasionally, until chicken reaches 165°F.
Brush generously with glaze in the final minutes of cooking and serve with extra glaze on the side.
A Fun Slice of Hawaiian Culture
In Hawaiian tradition, the word luau isn’t just a party—it’s a feast rooted in community, gratitude, and celebration. Traditional luaus often feature dishes like kalua pig, poke, and haupia (a coconut pudding dessert), served alongside music and hula dancing. While our Thomasville version may not have a pig in an imu (underground oven), the spirit is the same: sharing food, laughter, and good company.
